A little mention

It's been so busy these last few months I've barely had time to step away from the studio, a well deserved day off means I can catch up on my favourite blogs, and I'm pleased to see some of my work for Mamas and Papas featured on Print and Pattern back in February as part of their kids design week.

I did this

This week I've made friends with a site called Zippi, in a nutshell its a place that takes designs, and sells them onto other folks on a whole manner of products, such as iPhone and iPad cases, mugs coasters and wall art. So, never wanting to miss an opportunity, I decided to have a play, and this is what I came up with. More can be seen on my Zippi portfolio page.

Beige Inspiration

Here I've generated four mood boards for beige or neutral nursery ranges. The idea was to capture a feel that was modern and trend focused, yet a calm and soft environment in which to nurture your little one. I generated four directions, each with their own subtle differences depending on individual customers needs. Each with their own narrative and characters sets. I've used a wide range of images in these boards from varying sources, and I've collected many, many more. All the images are listed on my Pinterest board: Beige.

Mamas and Papas - Christmas

We're now well into December, so I feel it's an ideal time to post about my latest Christmas collection for Mamas and Papas. This year see's the introduction of tartan to the collection, to sit alongside the fake fur and pom pons of last year. The new range features all the usual characters Santa, Rudolf, Robin and Fairy, dancing to the music of christmas.

Its nice to see some of the lovely things I designed the for Mamas & Papas Patternology collection appearing in their Instagram photo's. Such a colourful range, great for accessorising any nursery or kids room.

Hello my deer

I can't help but noticing deers are everywhere at the moment, in many forms and guises. I've collected a few of my favourites above. I love the way the photo imagery is combined with spidery geometrics, to create these beautiful and intriguing images, that fit in well with the mood of the changing seasons.

I did this

ruth ashton_a jolly good egg

Every one appreciates a bit of loveliness, especially on a Monday. I stumbled across this design I did at Mamas and Papas what feels like a long time age now. But I think it's one on my favourite designs. It always brings a slight smile to my face when I see it. I hope it brightens your Monday too.

Earlier this year a new graphic range launched at Mamas and Papas which spanned across multiple categories including, baby ware, nursery interiors and gift. The graphics are very bright bold and simple and focus more at the toddler market.

The aim was to create a generic character set predominately made from geometric shapes and forms, that were more iconic than narrative based. More can be seen by following the link here.

A new nursery range

Some beautiful photography here of another interiors collection I had the pleasure of designing. It's always great to be able to design a range using your favourite colour palettes, but there's nothing better than seeing it come to life with 3D bows, leaves and luxurious quilt lines.

These bright and beautiful ranges in girl and boy skews, and can be mixed and matched with the current Mamas and Papas Timbuktales range.
More information and imagery of the collections can be found by following the link here for the girls and here for the boys.

A little bear

It's always exciting when the new seasons ranges hit the shelves, and this Autumn is no exception.
Here we have some bear designs I did for Mamas and Papas to update their bedtime hugs nursery collection, now re-named 'Night Time Hugs'. The range includes the usual bedding bale, and extends to dream pods, wall canvas', curtains and fleece blankets.

And new for this season, the range is available in a pink and blue option. Which see's the girl and boy equivalent of the bears floating away across the bedding range.

Something a little different

The Creeping Thistle  Monster, one of the 'Monsters of the Garden Variety' collection by Ruth Ashton

Well, I've been up to new and exciting things recently. One of them being setting up the mischievous brand of Intolerable Nuisances, which are making their debut appearance in LA this week.

The Plant Wilting Monster, one of the 'Monsters of the Garden Variety' collection by Ruth Ashton

The collective word for a group of monster is called a gaggle. And recently this gaggle of monsters  have travelled from where they originated in the North West of the UK all the way across the pond to LA, where they're currently on display in the Grace and Ritual: Hidden exhibition, at the Iam8bit gallery.

Grace & Ritual is an all women art exhibition, featuring over thirty female artists from across the globe. The exhibit theme, “Hidden,” encompasses secrets, things that go unnoticed and internal things that are hard to see.

something a little more seasonal

Well the sun is shining, the birds are singing and it's a Friday. The day of the week with the most potential. So here's a slightly more refined gif. to share some friday fun!!!
The image is an un-meddled with photo, taken in the highlands of Scotland, in the early morning, when there wasn't another sole around for miles. A perfect morning.

testing testing . . .

Testing, testing, 123, testing . . .
I decided to spend my lunch hour today learning how to make a GIF. Turns out, though I haven't really delved too deeply into the ins and outs of GIF making, (it was only a lunch hour after all!!!) its not as difficult a process as web design. Which is encouraging . . .

Shine - circus

It's been such a busy couple of weeks I almost forgot to share some of this quirkiness. These playfully  sinister characters look like characters from a magical carnival. Their costumes hint at a vintage circus, but are decorated with contemporary geometric fills and patterns. I love the simple colour palette of black and grey, with the bright block colour fills as highlights, it really adds a feeling of fun and mischief.

They can be found adorning the garments of the Mamas and Papas kids Mix and Match collection, see more from that range here.

Miximals - the worlds cutest new app

I found this on Friday, and couldn't stop playing wit it all weekend. It's the latest iPod app from Yatatoy, and is being heralded as the cutest app out there. the characters are beautifully naive and the colour palette is refreshingly bright and new. And impressively can be switched between five different languages.  Find out more about Miximals here!

The app is essentially an interactive flipbook, in which you swipe back and forth to mix and match the head, torso, and feet of various cartoon animals, along with the corresponding syllables. Every new creature you create interacts with you in a different way, meaning there are limitless possibilities, with of course equates to endless fun!!!

The animator Lucas Zanotto's blog is also a wonderful place to loose a few hours, have a look here . . .

A sneaky peak

Here's a sneaky peak of what I've been up to over the last couple of weeks. The beady eye of the Penny Pinching Monster - Werus Memoneyus, one of the most cunning thieves that will inhabit your home, from the book Monsters of the Household variety. . .
Find more mischief here from the Intolerable Nuisances blog.

I love this . . .

These bedding sets are amazingly bright bold and fun, I love the zingy colour palette, the photo-realistic print and most of all I love the choice of animals. Finding these in the shops today has made me very happy! And if something makes you smile then you know its a good thing. See more from the range here at, the rest of the website's worth an explore too . . .

Valentines creativity . . .

Our first date consisted of venturing off footpaths sliding down sheer scree slopes to secluded beaches, climbing over sea defences, and watching the sun go down over our own part of the world. Needless to say it was the best date ever. This little stowaway from my boot was the perfect keepsake of the perfect day, and makes a very fitting adornment to this years Valentines card. HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!!! See more from The Muffin & The Unicorn here.
