Ruth Ashton - Textile artist and Illustrator.
My interest in this type of work emerged when I was at university and really developed from there. I’ve always had a really vivid imagination and wanted to combine my love of textiles, illustration and story-telling in all my work.

about

Ruth Ashton is a textile artist and illustrator based in Nottinghamshire, UK. Ruth graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 2008 with a BA (Hons) in Textile Design.

During her time at university Ruth specialized in embroidery, and has combined her love of creating intricate textural surfaces, with her talent for creative writing, to design and illustrate a range of humorous and mischievous creatures that dwell in the shadows of our world.

By using unconventional materials and processes Ruth produces truly unique images, no two of which will ever be alike. The sense of humour captivated in Ruth's work is a quality that is quite rare. It is refreshing to see and adds a very special dimension to the work that really brings these monsters to life.

When Ruth isn't working on her monsters she enjoys doing a bit of photography and visiting the zoo.

Amanda Briggs-Goode, Programme Leader for Textile Design at Nottingham Trent University, said: “This is a fantastic honour for Ruth, her work generated a lot of attention at the University degree show and then at New Designers when she graduated last year. We are delighted that she has been recognised with this award and hope that this enables her to go from strength to strength.”

A high-profile panel of judges, including Design Week editor Lynda Relph Knight and Design Nation marketing manager, Rachel Moses, were impressed with the originality of Ruth’s ideas and her imagination. They also remarked on her commercial nous, which has already resulted in international deals for her first collection.
